A Classical Chinese Herbal Formula for Acute & Chronic Viral Infections, Immune Fortification & Deficiency Recovery

When a viral infection lingers, it is rarely just about the virus. Chronic viral patterns drain the body's Qi (energy), consume Yin (moisture), and leave the immune system too depleted to fully clear what it is fighting. That cycle of infection and depletion feeds itself. Herbal AVR is a sophisticated 24-herb formula designed to interrupt that cycle at every level simultaneously: clearing Wind-Heat and Toxic Heat from the acute infection, directly targeting viral replication, and rebuilding the foundational Qi and Yin that chronic illness consumes. Whether you are in the thick of an active viral infection or navigating the foggy aftermath of one that never fully resolved, this formula works on both the pathogen and the terrain.

How It Works

In TCM, effective treatment of viral infection requires three simultaneous strategies: clear the Heat and Toxins driving the active infection, strengthen the Wei (defensive) Qi and immune system so the body can finish the job, and nourish the Yin that chronic heat and illness deplete. Most antiviral formulas address only the first strategy. Herbal AVR addresses all three, making it particularly valuable for chronic, unresolved viral patterns where fatigue, low-grade fever, night sweats, and vague body aches persist long after the initial infection.

Key Herbs & What They Do

Clearing Wind-Heat & Eliminating Toxins

  • Huang Qin (Scutellaria) and Huang Lian (Coptis): Chief heat-clearing herbs with potent antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory activity. Clear toxic heat from the head and upper jiao
  • Ban Lan Gen (Isatis Root) and Xuan Shen (Scrophularia): Clear heat and eliminate toxins, with particular effectiveness against viral pathogens including Epstein-Barr, herpes, and influenza
  • Ma Bo (Puffball) and Jin Yin Hua (Honeysuckle Flower): Powerfully clear toxic heat from the throat and exterior, directly antiviral in action
  • Niu Bang Zi (Burdock Seed), Lian Qiao (Forsythia), and Bo He (Peppermint): Disperse wind-heat from the surface, reduce fever, and relieve swollen glands and sore throat
  • Sheng Ma (Cimicifuga) and Chai Hu (Bupleurum): Disperse wind-heat and offer antipyretic support, while Chai Hu guides the formula to the Liver and helps regulate the immune response
  • Jie Geng (Platycodon) and Gan Cao (Licorice Root): Work synergistically to soothe the throat, open the chest, and harmonize the formula
  • Yu Xing Cao (Houttuynia), Xian He Cao (Agrimony), and Xiang Chun Ye (Toona Leaf): Three herbs with documented antiviral action included specifically for their direct virucidal and immune-activating effects
  • Chen Pi (Aged Tangerine Peel): Regulates qi circulation, reduces swelling and inflammation, and protects the digestive system from the formula's more intense clearing herbs

Tonifying Qi & Strengthening Wei (Defensive) Qi

  • Huang Qi (Astragalus): One of the most studied immunomodulating herbs in classical Chinese medicine. Strengthens the wei qi, increases white blood cell activity, and supports the body's ability to clear pathogens
  • Ren Shen (Ginseng): Powerfully tonifies yuan qi, restores energy depleted by chronic infection, and supports immune cell production
  • Fu Ling (Poria) and Shan Yao (Chinese Yam): Strengthen the Spleen and support digestion, ensuring the immune-building herbs are absorbed and the formula does not burden a system already taxed by illness

Nourishing Yin & Clearing Deficiency Heat

  • Bai Shao (White Peony), Mai Dong (Ophiopogon), and Nu Zhen Zi (Ligustrum): A trio of yin-nourishing herbs that address the low-grade fever, night sweats, and depletion that characterize chronic viral patterns. Nu Zhen Zi also tonifies Liver and Kidney yin and supports immune resilience
  • Xuan Shen (Scrophularia): Beyond its heat-clearing role, protects yin from being consumed by the formula's more drying and clearing herbs

Supports

  • Acute viral infections: common cold, influenza, oral and genital herpes, shingles, Epstein-Barr, infectious mononucleosis, viral hepatitis, chickenpox, viral pneumonia
  • Chronic unresolved viral patterns: unexplained fatigue, low-grade fever, night sweats, vague body aches, continued weight loss
  • Immune system fortification and wei qi strengthening
  • Direct antiviral and virucidal activity against a broad range of viral pathogens
  • Yin replenishment and recovery from chronic illness-driven depletion

Best For

Those in the acute phase of a viral infection, or navigating a chronic pattern where a virus never fully resolves, and the body has been left depleted, fatigued, and unable to fully recover. This formula is stronger and more comprehensive than single-target antiviral herbs and is particularly well-suited to complex or stubborn viral presentations.

How to Use

Take 3 to 4 capsules three times daily on an empty stomach. In acute infections, dosage may be increased to 6 to 8 capsules every 4 to 6 hours as needed. For a sensitive digestive system, take 30 minutes after meals.

Contraindicated during pregnancy and nursing. Contraindicated in cases of deficiency with cold signs. Seek immediate medical attention if symptoms include stiff neck, vomiting, or mental confusion, as these may indicate encephalitis or meningitis.
