A Classical Chinese Herbal Formula for Stress, Anxiety, Emotional Stability & Restful Sleep

Chronic stress doesn't just affect your mood. Over time, it depletes the body's foundational resources, consuming yin, exhausting blood, and leaving the Shen, the spirit housed in the Heart, without the nourishment it needs to feel settled. The result is a pattern many women know well: a mind that won't quiet down, emotions that feel closer to the surface than usual, sleep that's hard to fall into and harder to stay in, and an underlying sense of depletion beneath all the doing. Calm ZZZ is a classical 13-herb formula built for exactly this pattern. It addresses both the excess and deficiency aspects of Shen disturbance simultaneously, calming what's overactive, nourishing what's depleted, and restoring the kind of inner steadiness that stress gradually erodes.

How It Works

In Chinese medicine, chronic stress most commonly creates a pattern of Liver qi stagnation that, over time, generates fire and depletes yin. The overactive, fiery aspects of this pattern show up as irritability, racing thoughts, difficulty falling asleep, and emotional reactivity. The deficient aspects show up as fatigue, emotional vulnerability, and sleep that is light and restless, even when exhaustion is present. Most formulas address one or the other. Calm ZZZ addresses both.

Key Herbs & What They Do

Calming Excess and Sedating Liver Fire

  • Chai Hu (Bupleurum) and Xiang Fu (Cyperus Rhizome): Regulate qi circulation and relieve Liver qi stagnation, the root pattern underlying stress-driven emotional and sleep disturbance
  • Gou Teng (Uncaria with Hooks): Calms Liver yang rising, relieves irritability, headache, and the agitated, wound-up quality that accompanies chronic stress
  • Deng Xin Cao (Rush Pith): Sedates Heart fire, calming the restlessness and mental hyperactivity that keeps the mind turning at night
  • Zhi Mu (Anemarrhena Rhizome): Clears deficiency fire, addressing the low-grade heat that chronic yin depletion generates and that drives the restless, hot, wakeful quality of stress-related insomnia

Nourishing Deficiency and Calming the Shen

  • Suan Zao Ren (Sour Jujube Seed): One of the primary herbs for Heart blood deficiency-type insomnia. Nourishes the Heart and Liver, calms the Shen, and is one of the most well-researched Chinese herbs for improving sleep quality and reducing anxiety
  • He Huan Hua (Albizia Flower): Known as the happiness flower, He Huan Hua lifts the spirit, relieves depression and emotional heaviness, and calms the Heart Shen
  • Shou Wu Teng (Polygonum Vine): Nourishes the Heart and blood, calms the Shen, and supports restful sleep through its combined nourishing and sedating actions
  • Fu Shen (Poria with Pine Root): A calming version of Poria with a stronger affinity for the Heart. Nourishes the Heart and calms the spirit, particularly for anxiety-driven sleep disturbance
  • Bai Shao (White Peony Root): Nourishes Liver blood and yin, softens Liver constraint, and helps soothe the emotional reactivity that comes with depletion

Harmonizing and Stabilizing

  • Xiao Mai (Wheat Grain), Gan Cao (Licorice Root), and Da Zao (Jujube Date): This classical trio from Gan Mai Da Zao Tang calms the Shen, stabilizes emotional swings, and gently nourishes the Heart and middle jiao. Together they provide the grounding, steadying quality that keeps the formula from being merely sedating

Supports

  • Relief from chronic stress, anxiety, and emotional volatility
  • Difficulty falling and staying asleep driven by an overactive mind
  • Irritability, restlessness, and stress-related mood instability
  • Heart blood and yin nourishment to address depletion underlying the pattern
