Gardenia Complex
A Classical Chinese Herbal Formula to Clear Excess Heat, Reduce Inflammation & Restore Balance
In Chinese medicine, heat and fire are not just metaphors. They describe a real physiological pattern: the body running too hot, too fast, and too hard. Infection, inflammation, elevated blood pressure, fever, liver congestion, acid reflux, and burning pain are all expressions of excess heat accumulating in the body's organ systems. When the Heart, Liver, and Stomach bear the brunt of this heat, the body signals distress through symptoms that are often treated in isolation in conventional medicine but share a common root in TCM. Gardenia Complex is a sophisticated, multi-herb classical formula designed to address that root directly: clearing heat and fire from all three jiaos, draining damp-heat through urination, eliminating toxins, and protecting the blood and yin that excess heat so readily depletes.
How It Works
This formula draws from several classical TCM traditions, most notably the Bai Hu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) lineage for draining Stomach fire, and Long Dan Xie Gan Tang principles for sedating Liver heat. The result is a broad-spectrum heat-clearing formula that works on multiple organ systems simultaneously. Alongside its heat-clearing action, the formula includes blood-nourishing and yin-protecting herbs to ensure that the aggressive heat-clearing agents do not deplete the body in the process. It is a formula of precision: clearing what needs to go while preserving what needs to stay.
Key Herbs & What They Do
- Zhi Zi (Gardenia Fruit): The chief herb, clearing heat from all three jiaos. Offers hepatoprotective, antipyretic, antihypertensive, and anti-inflammatory actions, and helps reduce gastric acid secretion
- Shi Gao (Gypsum), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhena), and Geng Mi (Rice): Together these represent the classic White Tiger Decoction to drain Yangming Stomach fire, reduce fever, and clear intense internal heat
- Long Dan (Gentian Root) and Huang Qin (Scutellaria): Powerfully sedates Liver and Gallbladder fire, with well-documented antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, and antihypertensive actions
- Chai Hu (Bupleurum): A channel-guiding herb that directs the formula to the Liver, enhances the fire-sedating action of Long Dan and Huang Qin, and offers sedative and anti-inflammatory support
- Mu Dan Pi (Moutan Bark) and Huang Bo (Phellodendron): Clear deficiency heat from the Kidney and offer additional anti-inflammatory and antihypertensive benefit
- Di Huang and Shu Di Huang (Rehmannia, raw and prepared): Nourish yin and cool blood heat, protecting Liver blood from depletion by the formula's more aggressive clearing herbs
- Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis): Tonifies and invigorates the blood, ensuring the heat-clearing herbs do not damage the Liver's blood supply
- Che Qian Zi (Plantago Seed), Ze Xie (Alisma), Bian Xu (Knotweed), and Fu Ling (Poria): Drain damp-heat downward and eliminate it through urination, supporting kidney and bladder function
- Shan Zhu Yu (Cornus Fruit): Nourishes Kidney yin to prevent the draining herbs from depleting yin over time
- Shan Yao (Chinese Yam) and Gan Cao (Licorice Root): Protect the middle jiao from harsh clearing herbs and harmonize the entire formula
