A Classical Chinese Herbal Formula for Cold-Type Respiratory Disorders, Wheezing & Lung Congestion

Not all respiratory distress comes from heat and infection. Cold-type respiratory patterns tell a different story: chills without fever, clear or white watery nasal discharge, sneezing, intolerance to cold air or cold foods and drinks, a grayish or cyanotic complexion, and wheezing that worsens in cold temperatures or damp conditions. In Chinese medicine, this is understood as Lung cold: a pattern where cold has impaired the lung's ability to move fluids and regulate qi, leading to congestion, phlegm accumulation, and compromised airway function. Respitrol (Cold) is a warming, phlegm-clearing formula designed specifically for this pattern. It dispels cold from the interior, warms and opens the lungs, eliminates phlegm, and restores smooth qi circulation through the respiratory system.

How It Works

This formula addresses cold-type respiratory disorders through two coordinated actions. First, warming and dispersing herbs actively drive out the cold pathogen, restore fluid metabolism in the upper jiao, and open the airways. Second, phlegm-resolving and qi-regulating herbs clear accumulated congestion, reduce wheezing and dyspnea, and restore the lung's natural descending and dispersing function. A protective astringent herb is included to consolidate Lung qi and prevent depletion, while harmonizing herbs relieve bronchial spasm and protect the formula's overall balance.

Key Herbs & What They Do

  • Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger): Warms the Lung interior, dispels cold, and restores proper fluid metabolism when cold has impaired the lung's water regulation
  • Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig): Warms and opens the channels, works synergistically with Bai Shao to tonify and harmonize the wei (defensive) and ying (nutritive) levels, and supports the body's resistance to cold invasion
  • Jie Zi (Mustard Seed): Warms the Lung, disperses cold-phlegm, and regulates qi flow to relieve wheezing and chest congestion
  • Zi Su Zi (Perilla Seed): Warms the Lung, arrests wheezing, and moves accumulated fluid by regulating Lung qi downward
  • Cang Er Zi (Xanthium Fruit, dry-fried): Dispels wind-cold, opens nasal passages, and moves water. Carefully dry-fried at high temperature to enhance efficacy and reduce side effects by modifying the herb's active compound profile
  • Ku Xing Ren (Bitter Apricot Kernel): Eliminates phlegm, transforms congested fluids, and reduces wheezing by descending rebellious Lung qi
  • Hou Po (Magnolia Bark): Works synergistically with Ku Xing Ren to dissolve phlegm, expand the chest, and relieve congestion and fullness
  • Zi Wan (Aster Root): Expels wind, relieves dyspnea, and calms chest discomfort and wheezing
  • Pi Pa Ye (Loquat Leaf): Clears the upper respiratory tract, eliminates phlegm, and supports the lung's descending action
  • Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra Berry): Consolidates and protects Lung qi, preventing depletion as the warming and dispersing herbs do their work
  • Bai Shao (White Peony Root) and Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-Prepared Licorice): Together relieve bronchial spasm, alleviate pain, and harmonize the entire formula

Supports

  • Relief of cold-type wheezing, dyspnea, and shortness of breath
  • Clearing of white or clear phlegm and nasal congestion
  • Warming and opening of cold-contracted airways
  • Antibiotic support for bacterial and viral respiratory infections
  • Bronchodilation and smooth airway function
  • Immediate relief for wind-cold exposure, including cold weather and cold water immersion

Best For

Cold-type respiratory disorders with clear signs of cold: chills, watery white nasal discharge, sneezing, absence of fever, and cold intolerance. Indicated for cold-type asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic bronchitis, and common cold or influenza from wind-cold exposure. Not appropriate for heat-type or deficiency-type respiratory presentations.

How to Use

Take 4 to 6 capsules up to three times daily with warm water as directed by your healthcare provider. Begin at the first sign of respiratory discomfort for maximum effectiveness. Discontinue when symptoms resolve.

Contains Ku Xing Ren (Bitter Apricot Kernel), a tree nut allergen. Contraindicated during pregnancy and nursing. Not for long-term use: discontinue once the desired effect is achieved. Individuals with pre-existing liver or kidney conditions should not take this formula due to the presence of Cang Er Zi. Consult your healthcare provider before taking.
